In 1885, much of Malaysia remained an untouched mystery. British researcher Sir William Cameron, commissioned by the British Council, set off to map unexplored regions, eventually tracing the Kinta River to its source. Arriving at the peak of Gunung Chabang, he established a camp and began documenting the area, where he discovered a series of high plateaus at elevations ranging from 1,340 to 1,800 meters. Tragically, Cameron passed away soon after, and his maps were lost. Nearly forty years later, a new expedition led by Sir George Maxwell set out to rediscover Cameron’s plateaus, and in his honor, the area was named Cameron Highlands.
In 1966, retired British Colonel Stanley J. Foster began construction on The Lakehouse, fulfilling his lifelong dream of owning a Bed & Breakfast. The colonial-style property took four years to complete, and in 1970, it opened its doors. Foster’s private residence, now the Fosters Suite, overlooks the main building from the Hilltop House, a testament to his vision. Today, The Lakehouse stands as a beautifully preserved colonial retreat in the Cameron Highlands, exuding old-world charm and offering guests a timeless experience in one of Malaysia’s most scenic and historic regions.
